about the artist

Shameka Carter was born in South Korea and was raised in Hinesville, GA and Memphis, TN. She was always a creative child, and so she became more focused on her art during high school. She went on to earn her BFA degree in computer arts from Memphis College of Art, and her MAT degree in art education from the University of Memphis. She has been teaching art for MCS and SCS since 2007. Carter officially started selling her art, through her e-commerce business last year, Adorn Daily.

She creates mixed media art, jewelry and home decor items. Her process almost always includes layers of mixed media that depicts abstract, metallic and delicate imagery. She feels that people and creatures have so many layers to them, and they represent so many levels of existing that involve their emotional, physical, social or spiritual being. She feels her art depicts those layers that involve those aspects. She chooses to portray imagery that intrigues and aesthetically pleases her. These images and objects are then shown using layered media and textures, that partially cover or take away the “beauty” of the objects. This process is her perfect combination of portraying the real layers of life, people and objects; the beautiful and the rough. This is her perception of the world.
